Design Thinking Courses and Certificates at SCD

Siebel Center for Design (SCD) is again offering a variety of courses this spring, including integrating design thinking into the contexts of health innovation, immersive experiences, social design, and education.

**********************

SCD has launched three new undergraduate certificate programs to embed design thinking into these specific contexts:

HEALTH INNOVATION

Introduction to Health Innovation (DTX 495 - A)

Students explore the landscape of how human-centered design is currently being applied to various aspects of health as well as develop speculative frameworks around the future of human-centered design in health innovation.

Online asynchronous, 2 credit hours, first 8 weeks

Design Thinking & Health Innovation (DTX 495 - DHI)

This project-based course deepens student understanding around the practical application of design thinking to a particular area of health innovation.

Online synchronous, 2 credit hours, second 8 weeks

SOCIAL IMPACT

Design for Social Impact (DTX 455)

An immersive exploration of design thinking as a method for tackling social needs and issues. Students in this course will work in collaborative teams to employ the human-centered design process to discover and develop innovative solutions for social problems such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, and violence.

3 or 4 credit hours, 16-week course

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES

Introduction to Immersive Experiences (DTX 495 - IE1)

Learners explore the landscape of how human-centered design is currently being applied to various aspects of immersive experiences as well as develop speculative frameworks around the future of human-centered design in this context.

Online asynchronous, 2 credit hours, first 8 weeks

Design Thinking & Immersive Experiences (DTX 495 - IE2)

Students will explore the intersection of human-centered design and immersive environments in this comprehensive, project-based course. Students will use design thinking to develop innovative solutions tailored to the challenges of immersive experiences spanning diverse industries.

Online synchronous, 2 credit hours, second 8 weeks

For each of these certificates, we are also offering this capstone course:

Innovation Studio (DTX 499)

Students will be assigned to a semester-long group project where they will conduct research, propose and prototype designs, and plan for the implementation and launch of the team’s final designs. By collaborating with local organizations, students have access to the audience who will be most impacted by their designs, so teams can collaborate with the users throughout the semester.

3 or 4 credit hours, 16-week course

And finally, we are offering two courses specific to design thinking and education:

Design Thinking & Responsive Teaching (DTX 495 - RT)

This course provides an overview of human-centered design as it connects responsive teaching practices and instructional design. By the end of the course, students will have practical experience developing strategies for learning about students holistically, making insights based on empathic understandings, brainstorming ideas to be responsive to student needs and desires, developing these ideas and implementing them, and meaningfully collecting and responding to feedback.

2 credit hours, first 8 weeks

Design Thinking & Teaching Disciplinary Concepts (DTX 495 - TDC)

This course provides an overview of human-centered design as an instructional approach to help students learn and master disciplinary concepts. By the end of the course, Students will have a plan for teaching students about HCD as well as hands-on experience designing a discipline-based design challenge and implementing it in the classroom.

2 credit hours, second 8 weeks
