FAA 491: Sustainable Design in Japan (3 credit hours, SD Major Elective)

May 12 to May 25, 2024 (13 nights)

Priority Deadline: December 15, 2023

This course will be a two week immersive experience in Japanese sustainable design and eco-conscious living. We kick off in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, where we'll engage with visionary designers and delve into cutting-edge urban concepts of sustainability. After several days in Tokyo, we will move to Kyoto, the quintessential cultural hub of Japan, to explore sustainability initiatives embedded within the traditional arts and culture of Japan. The next destination is Kamikatsu, Japan’s first zero-waste city located on the island of Shikoku. Here, we will learn from local people about the motivations, rewards, and challenges of waste-free existence by participating in the Kamikatsu recycling processes and collaborating with locals on sustainability-related projects. Finally, we will end in Yokohama where we'll explore food waste recycling programs and grassroots circular economy initiatives. This course abroad seeks to enrich our students' understanding of sustainable living and design while exposing them to different cultural ideas and approaches. By the end of this course, we expect students to be able to reflect on Japan’s sustainability ethos and to think about ways to integrate Japanese sustainability practices into their own work. Through this course, we hope students will take a step toward becoming responsible global citizens while enhancing our institution's commitment to a greener future.
