NSF-GRF Summer Writing Lab for Students

This summer, the Graduate College Office of External Fellowships will host a six-week writing lab to help students prepare competitive applications for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF-GRFP). The NSF-GRFP is open to US citizens, permanent residents, and nationals pursuing master’s and PhD degrees in the sciences, social sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and STEM education fields. The fellowship provides three years of support, with a $37,000 annual stipend and many additional benefits.

Incoming first- and rising second-year graduate students as well as undergraduate seniors in all eligible STEM and STEM education fields are welcome to join the writing lab. Given that graduate students can apply for the GRF only once, in either their first or their second year, we ask that you let not only current students but incoming students know about the writing lab, and we ask you to work closely with your advisees to help them decide which year they should apply. Students are welcome to participate in the lab regardless of when they will apply.

Virtual lab meetings will be held weekly 3-5 PM on Thursdays from June 13 to July 27 (no meeting on July 4). Interested students should confirm that they meet the general eligibility criteria and can commit to attending Thursday meetings. Participants will benefit from research proposal and personal statement workshops tailored to the NSF-GRFP, focused writing exercises, and structured peer review. Participants can also expect to spend 5-10 hours per week on independent writing.

Students should register for the summer writing lab by Thursday, May 30.
