Community-Based Sustainable Design at Casa Pueblo in Puerto Rico

Join Professor Sara Bartumeus Ferré in a full-semester course this spring (FAA 491, 4 credit hours or discuss alternative credit with your department) which will include both seminar and studio components to prepare for spring break site travel to San Juan and Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Casa Pueblo is located in the rural mountainside of Puerto Rico, about 2 hours from San Juan and is a community-based organization that focuses on sustainable development. This will be a transformative experience to engage in learning and actively tackling real-world challenges and learn the value of community engagement.
This course, trip, and final project will entail conducting design surveys, participating in interactive sessions, utilizing cartographic processes to map and identify potential intervention areas, and creating innovative projects that make meaningful contributions to the local community, aligning with Casa Pueblo's mission of sustainable and just development. This holistic approach will sharpen your communication skills, enabling effective interaction within communities, fostering multicultural awareness, and advocating for diversity within the realm of sustainable design.

Open to BSSD, UP, LA, ARCH undergraduate students
